Description
St. Clare of Assisi was quite a rebel in her day. Born rich, slated to marry a wealthy man, she ran away to follow St. Francis after hearing him speak. She cut her hair, donned a rough brown robe, and vowed to live a simple, humble life in service to Jesus. Eventually she founded the "Poor Clares", an order that exists to this day.
Clare is best known for saving her convent from attackers who were invading Assisi and intending to raid the convent first. Although very ill at the time, she had her sisters carry her to the convent wall where she prayed with the Blessed Sacrament for help from above. It came when the attackers mysteriously fled quickly away. For this reason, she is often portrayed holding a monstrance, the decorative vessel that displays the Blessed Sacrament for veneration.
Saint Clare is the patron saint of sore eyes and her feast day is Aug 11.
